Be Not Distracted!
You have a knack for writing. It’s a gift! You want to nurture your gift; become a wordsmith. You understand that the way to achieving this goal is by writing. Practice, practice, practice! A writer must write. Whether your thing is writing plays or poems, fiction or non-fiction, novels or short stories, articles or what have you; simply put, you must write.
The business of everyday living can be very flustering because there are so many things pulling at you and vying for your time and attention. But, writing is vital and valuable to you also, and it takes discipline so you devised a plan; a schedule to keep you on track.
You’ll cut down or cut out those time consuming activities that just don’t support your vision. You’ll watch less television and spend less time on the phone. You’ll start hitting the sack an hour later or rising an hour earlier just to write. Your lunch times and travel times will be used for jotting down ideas or for working on current writing projects. You won’t allow yourself to be distracted because you know that distractions open the door for procrastination aka the robber of blessings.
According to Jesus, giving time to distractions is a value judgment and a choice.
Luke 10:38-41 (NIV) As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “You are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better and it will not be taken away from her.”
Writers, value your gift but even more so, value your time with God for He is the Giver of the gift and He values you. Set aside a daily time just for you and Him; guard that time! Grow your relationship with Him through a discipline of spiritual practices such as worshiping, praying, reading, meditating, and listening. Don’t let anything distract you from these practices.
